History

In the beginning.....

Northallerton Advanced Bikes was formed in June 1998 by a group of bikers who all shared a passion for bikes, and wanted to improve and enhance their skills to enable them to enjoy the biking "buzz" to the max.

Many of the new members coming to the Group have suggested that some of their main motivating factors were the wish to reduce their vulnerability as bikers; to ride with more like-minded people who enjoyed bikes but were not putting lives at risk every time they ventured out on 2 wheels; and quite commonly, the acceptance that their riding mates were making them ride in a way which they found uncomfortable and unacceptable. In short, they wanted to be safer, but still have the skills to enjoy their machines for a long time to come - recognising that "safe"  did not necessarily mean "boring" !

We are a voluntary, charitable organisation affiliated to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) and as such we are in a position to be able to offer guidance to those wishing to take the Advanced Motorcycle Test.

The Group has steadily grown over the last few years and is particularly liked and respected within this region for still retaining a unique training structure - we are proud to be able to offer new Associates a dedicated Observer of their own throughout their preparation. This allows for much greater flexibility for the rideout arrangements between the Associate and his/her Observer, and enhances the building of more effective working relationships.                     Many other Groups operate a course structure whereby the candidate turns up at set times and days and is allocated whichever Observer is then available.

We have over 40 members riding everything from sports exotica through to custom cruisers. They all enjoy biking and all things bike-related, and many have passed their IAM tests becoming more confident, more competent and safer riders in the process.

A number have progressed from test to be further trained to become Observers within the group assisting new Associates to become Advanced Riders too.
